French press.
pz racing July 24th, 2006In 2001 while riding in my first year as a pro with Mercury-Viatel I spent part of the summer in St.Jeannet France with Floyd and Will Frischkorn. In the middle of the summer things started to go sour with Viatel and the team began to disband. Our DS, John Wordin, sent out an email to the team instructing those of us in France not to speak with the french press. Floyd and I decided to send out an email to the team of him speaking with “the french press”. Sent out this pic to the team with a note saying that Floyd went against team orders and spoke with the press and has now been suspended from the team.

you know… its cracks like this that make my wife think that us cyclists are weird.
Personally, I thought it was funny.

Dear Phil,
Please do the entire community a favor and let your readers know that Floyd was most likely wearing that hat as a prop for the photo and not as a means of a “fashion statement”.
Please Phil.
Otherwise, every cycling goober in the world will now be wearing cycling caps out and about in society. Phil, the cycling community is on the brinks of being accepted by todays modern society and cannot sustain any major setbacks such as that.
The fate of cycling as we know it rests in your hands……

please provide some kind of comment on the current Landis situation.

Phil,
although I believe the issue regarding Floyd should really be a non-issue, the fact in this world is that perception is reality. As a pro cyclist, I’m sure this affects you in a certain way. I’m not in a position to speculate on how it would effect your sport, however, as a passionate cyclist, I understand that you guys are under a lot of pressure. There are so many little variables that can come out in a dope test, how can you guys pay attention to all that stuff. Plus, the sharks smell blood, so now and in the immediate future, any slip or test or even questionable tests, whether guilty or not, will be assumed guilty. That is sad, but true. Just wanted to weigh in.
I wish you the best in your career and look forward to seeing you out on the roads in Tucson.
Later.

Phil,
Don’t ignore your following…….and forget the dope test talk for a quick minute………..Sorry, I don’t wish to be frank with you, so I’ll just be Austin…….Don’t get me wrong Phil, the dope test is very very important at the current minute, but the cycling cap issue is more prevelent to the status of cycling as we know it in today’s modern metropolitan society. You don’t see Louis Vuitton making a cycling cap do you? There’s a reason for that……..
Please Phil, only you can shed light on this dark moment of fashion sense that the sporting world has felt.
Holding my breath till you respond,
(gasp)

the funny thing is Austin…. Phil Put this up before the report of any drug scandle.

Austin is spot on. I retract my earlier statement. Im already tired of hearing about Floyd. What will be, will be, unfortunately the damage is done. So… cycling caps, yes… what is the future of the cycling cap? What do you see as the big trend in cycling fashion…
Campy Carbon Flowbees? I did see something about Jewel encrusted helmets… how gaudy. You know… lets start a grassroots effort to contact Project Runway to have those knuckleheads come up with something.
You know, I’ve always been partial to a shark fin in the middle of the back or helmets shaped like animals.
Phil, if you could have a helmet shaped like an animal, what animal would it be and why.

Phil,
People are requesting your behind-the-scenes insight, man. I say, forget cycling caps, forget testosterone. Right, we all know testosterone is being mis-used by some in the peloton…we can read any headline for that info. I’d like your comments on the use of estrogen within the peloton. Don’t deny that it’s being used man… How much?? How often?? How is it rumored to affect performance??! Give us the scoop on estrogen!

Phil,
Please come out of hiding……… Do it for the greater good of the sport of cycling. I stopped holding my breath days ago.
Forget the crazy talk of testosterone, estrogen or any other doctor office talk word. We don’t need those words anyways and most of us don’t even know what they are. We’re bike racers for heaven’s sake not Math Magicians. Now, I know you wouldn’t ever wear a cycling cap in public. The Hawaiian’s telling lies. I know. However, if you do have to ever publicly wear a cycling cap, I like the aforementioned comment of “bills up, ho’s down”. It just sounds like the right thing to do.
Phil……..we need you. Don’t run from the sudden and newfound publicity my original comment has given your website or I’ll take my comment leaving abilities elsewhere.
Please Phil……
No longer holding his breath but eagerly anticipating your response,
Austin
